Biography

Pro Futura Scientia Fellow, SCAS
Assistant Professor of History, Lund University

Christa Lundberg is a historian of early modern Europe, whose research focuses on the history of books, universities, and knowledge. After completing her PhD at the University of Cambridge in 2022, she took up a Junior Research Fellowship at St Catharine’s College in Cambridge (2022–2025). She has been a Fellow at the Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz and has studied in Gothenburg, Lyon, London, and Los Angeles.

Much of Lundberg’s research has focused on French intellectual culture in the era of the Renaissance and the Reformation. Her monograph Print and the Remaking of Theology in Paris, 1490–1540 is appearing with Oxford University Press this year. The book explores how the emerging scholarly press contributed to reshaping conceptions of theological expertise – what theologians should know and how they should contribute to broader society – during a period of institutional and religious upheaval.

As a Pro Futura Scientia Fellow, Lundberg will work on her next major project, “Plagiarism Hunting in Early Modern Europe: Knowledge Circulation and its Limits”. This project investigates how early modern scholars grappled with plagiarism as a theoretical and practical challenge. Drawing on philosophical treatises about plagiarism, debated cases, and institutional responses, the research reveals how authors and educators negotiated the boundaries of intellectual ownership. In doing so, it uncovers the entanglements of media, institutions, and authors in the long history of academic integrity. Alongside this work, Lundberg is also establishing a network for plagiarism studies and welcomes contact from researchers with shared interests.
