Research Project
Rabindranath Tagore and the Calcutta Municipal Gazette: A Study of Civic Discourse, Public Relations, and Urban Governance (1924–1991)

I have been working on different areas of Tagore since 2012. My prior research has engaged with different aspects of Tagore's literary and ideational input in various journal publications during the pre-independent and post-independent era. This study will explore the input of Rabindranath Tagore and his significance in the Calcutta Municipal Gazette from 1924 onwards up till 1991.

The Calcutta Municipal Gazette, which first appeared in print in 1924, functioned as a significant means of communication and documentation of civic, social, and cultural advancements of the city. Tagore's impact spread far beyond literature and philosophy into socio-political discourses of his era. His engagement with municipal administration, his thoughts on city life, and how the Gazette portrayed him are the key areas to explore in the research and develop an understanding of his legacy within an urban administrative and public relations framework.

Tagore was immensely involved in the socio-political life of Kolkata, and his appearance in the Calcutta Municipal Gazette showcases the conjoining of literature, administration, and civic awareness. His ideology of nationalism, civic duties, education, and culture were frequently featured in the Gazette. The study will explore the references, articles, and mentions of Tagore in the Gazette to reveal how his vision was compatible with the administrative and cultural ethos during that period.
