The Collegium de Lyon is the Institute for Advanced Study of the Université de Lyon, a leading federal institution of higher education and world-class research that covers the entire Lyon/Saint-Etienne area and boasts one of the strongest research ecosystems in the country, with 6,800 research staff in 172 laboratories.
The Collegium's mission is to play a pivotal role in shaping the evolution of the global interdisciplinary research landscape. As a hub for outstanding research, it gives its international fellows the freedom to explore groundbreaking insights, challenge prevailing paradigms, and generate new knowledge beyond the limitations of traditional academic structures.
The Collegium nurtures original and ambitious research projects aligned with the scientific scope of one of its academic ecosystem's research units. It typically hosts an equal number of fellows from the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH) and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) sectors, who are united in the IAS's weekly interdisciplinary seminar.
The Collegium de Lyon offers one- or two-semester fellowships to international scholars of all disciplines from around the world. Each year, it hosts about 20 fellows, maintaining a balanced mix of fellows from the SSH and STEM disciplines. Some fellowships are designed to promote partnerships in specific areas (water science, digital science and technology, human health) and to foster intercontinental collaborations (Fulbright and University of São Paulo joint initiatives). Calls for applications are issued between 9 and 18 months before the fellows' arrival at the IAS.
A key element of the Collegium's hosting philosophy is its aim to also successfully integrate each fellow into the local academic ecosystem within their discipline. All fellows are scientifically co-hosted by a local research unit in order to fully blend into their campus community.
Fellows are accommodated in fully furnished one- to three-bedroom apartments located in a dedicated building on the Descartes campus of the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, which is conveniently located next to several metro and tram stops. They share a workspace on the first floor of the residence and have access to all campus facilities, including the Denis Diderot University Library and its interlibrary loan service.
