Research Project
Explaining Social Democratic Party Decline

How has European politics undergone transformation, particularly in relation to elections, political parties, and representation? Given the fundamental challenges faced by European democracies, such as climate change, immigration, and digitalization, it is crucial to seek solutions to these issues. This NIAS Theme Group focuses on exploring the dynamics of progressive politics within European democracies.

As coordinator of the theme group, Tarik Abou-Chadi (together with member Markus Wagner) aims to provide a comprehensive explanation for the variation in support of Social Democratic parties in Western Europe in the past 20 years. This research focuses on different types of voters and how their changing behavior can explain electoral decline and continued electoral support of Social Democratic parties.

Research Interests:

Social Democratic party decline; electoral behavior; voter segmentation; European party systems
