Biography

Dario Campisi holds a PhD in Astronomy from Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands. His work bridges astronomy and chemistry, exploring the universe through computer simulations. In his previous research, he helped clarify the role of interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons—key astronomical molecules—in hydrogen formation and dust preservation. After research experiences at the University of Chicago, the University of Stuttgart as a Humboldt Fellow, and the University of Perugia, Dario is now an AIAS–AUFF Fellow. His current work focuses on developing smart algorithms to compute activation barriers for processes occurring on interstellar dust surfaces, as well as adaptive molecular dynamics methods to study how energy is redistributed during collisions between vibrationally excited H₃⁺ and small molecules—processes that influence astrochemical evolution and observable spectral lines.

Smart-Algorithms to bridge the gap between chemistry and astronomy

Understanding molecular processes and dynamics on the surfaces of dust grains and in the gas phase within star-forming clouds is essential for probing the origins of the universe. This requires an understanding of nanoscopic properties that underpin large-scale phenomena. Current quantum chemistry methods are not sufficiently developed to address challenges in astronomy. At AIAS, Dario Campisi is developing new methodologies based on smart, adaptive algorithms that dynamically optimize computational settings by monitoring calculations in real time. The goal is to translate quantum chemistry results into forms suitable for astronomical modeling, bridging the gap between the two disciplines.
