Federica Cavaletti
Federica Cavaletti is trained in aesthetics as theory of perception and enjoys blending this discipline with the cognitive sciences, and mixing theoretical reflection with empirical data. Her PhD work concerned time perception in audio-visual media. As post-doc fellow in the ERC project AN-ICON (University of Milan), she studied the usage of virtual reality (VR) in psychotherapy and healthcare. Since 2024, she has been Head of Research of TIMELAPSE, a project dedicated to creating a VR app to accelerate subjective time passage in chemotherapy.
Time experience can vary considerably across individuals with diverse psychological traits. If not properly recognised and managed, these differences can make life together challenging. Federica Cavaletti's project focusses on a specific aspect of this problem, with the goal of improving neurodiverse collaboration in academia. Indeed, academic research imposes many time-related expectations that are risk factors for occupational stress and work-life imbalance. Such outcomes are more likely for those who experience time in unconventional ways, such as neurodivergent people - an umbrella term referring to conditions that imply a cognitive, affective, and/or sensory functioning that differs from the “neurotypical” population. By combining theoretical elaboration, methods from empirical phenomenology, and participatory tools, her project aims to 1) study the modes of interaction between neurodivergent and neurotypical temporalities in academic research; 2) develop more aware and effective forms of neurodiverse research collaboration based on improved shared time.
