Since its founding, the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (Zentrum für interdisziplinäre
Forschung, ZiF), Bielefeld University's Institute for Advanced Study, has fostered collaboration
among researchers from different disciplines within thematically focused research groups. On the
occasion of its 60th anniversary in 2028, ZiF will turn its attention to its own institutional mission
by making interdisciplinarity the object of systematic scholarly reflection – and by curating a
collaborative group of fellows on this topic.

ZiF welcomes applications for individual fellowships from researchers across various disciplinary
backgrounds whose work centers on the theory and practice of interdisciplinary research. Fellows will
spend six months in residence at ZiF, pursuing their individual research projects while also engaging
in intensive intellectual exchange with other fellows who are part of this Interdisciplinarity Group
as well as with colleagues from Bielefeld University. ZiF will provide a stimulating interdisciplinary
environment and organise formats for discussion and collaboration.

With this group, ZiF aims to advance outstanding research on the practices, conditions, and epistemic
foundations of interdisciplinary research. At the same time, it seeks to translate theoretical insights
into practical approaches for fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, including the development
of concepts, methods, and institutional support structures that can strengthen interdisciplinary
research at ZiF and beyond.

Thematic Focus
The group approaches interdisciplinarity not only as a mode of organising research, but also as an
important object of scholarly inquiry. It seeks to advance a deeper understanding of the epistemic,
cognitive, social, and institutional practices through which interdisciplinary research is conducted
and interdisciplinary knowledge is produced. The group aims to bring together researchers who
study these practices from diverse disciplinary perspectives and methodological traditions, while
engaging in a shared conversation about the forms, conditions, dynamics, and outcomes of
interdisciplinary collaboration from a reflective perspective.

Possible research questions include, but are not limited to:
• How is interdisciplinary research organised and practised in different institutional settings?
• What epistemic, methodological, cognitive, and social processes shape interdisciplinary
collaboration and knowledge production?
• How are concepts, methods, data, models, and other forms of knowledge integrated across
disciplinary boundaries?
• How do interdisciplinary teams communicate, coordinate their work, negotiate differences,
and develop shared understandings?
• How can reflective knowledge about interdisciplinary research inform the design of concepts,
methods, training formats, and institutional structures that strengthen interdisciplinary
collaboration?

The call welcomes theoretical, conceptual, empirical, historical, and mixed-methods approaches.
We welcome proposals from scholars working in disciplines that explicitly study science and scientific
practice, such as philosophy, history, sociology, anthropology, psychology, science and technology
studies, higher education research, and organisational studies, as well as from researchers in other
disciplines whose projects adopt a clearly articulated reflective perspective on interdisciplinary
research.

Group Structure
The Interdisciplinarity Group is convened by ZiF and has the following key features:

• Group size: eight to ten fellows (with residential fellowships of six months)
• Timing: 1 October 2028 – 31 March 31 2029
• Composition: fellows from a diverse range of disciplines
• Kick-off workshop: ZiF will organise a kick-off workshop for successful candidates from 13 to 17
  March 2028 for all group members to meet and get to know each other, establish initial modes of
  collaboration, clarify shared expectations and goals, and lay the groundwork for the residency.
  On-site participation in this workshop is mandatory. ZiF will cover travel and accommodation
  to enable on-site participation.
• Residency format: This is not a fellowship to merely conduct an individual research project,
  but is characterised by a combination of independent research and structured collaborative
  activities throughout the residency. The readiness to engage in these activities is a significant
  prerequisite.

What ZiF offers

• A six-month fellowship (October 2028 to March 2029) in an inspiring interdisciplinary environment
• Buy-out options: ZiF offers various buy-out options (e.g. funding for teaching replacement) to
  enable participation in the group; alternatively, allowances are available to support your stay
  in Bielefeld.

• Accommodation: housing on the ZiF campus (subject to availability) or an alternative in Bielefeld
  at no additional cost

What ZiF expects
We are seeking researchers who:

• propose an independent, reflective research project on the practices of interdisciplinary
  research;
• are interested in intensive interdisciplinary exchange with others;
• are willing to actively participate in cooperative work phases;

• are willing to contribute to the development of concepts, methods, and institutional support
  structures that can strengthen interdisciplinary research at ZiF and beyond.

  The formal requirements for an application are:

• a doctoral degree,
• an affiliation with a university or research institute (especially for the duration of the fellowship),
• confirmation from the home institution that leave will be granted (from October 2028 until
  March 2029) if the fellowship is awarded.

Selection Process and Criteria
The selection process involves a committee appointed by ZiF. Applications will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:

• Scholarly quality of the proposed research project
• Originality of the project
• Relevance of the project to the thematic focus of the Interdisciplinarity Group (i.e., practices of interdisciplinary research, reflective approach)
• Previous research on interdisciplinarity and related topics
• Demonstrated engagement with reflective approaches (at least one relevant publication plus further evidence of engagement with reflective approaches, e.g. conference presentation, project contribution, or comparable output)
• Experience of and openness to interdisciplinary collaboration

Following a selection based on the written applications, shortlisted candidates will be invited to an
online interview.

As part of the multi-year partnership between the Inria Centre in Lyon and the Collegium de Lyon, the call for applications for the Collegium’s Inria fellowship is now open. This programme allows a researcher to be hosted each year for a period of 5 to 10 months, between September and June.

Inria is the national research institute for digital science and technology.

The fellowship is open to scholars who hold a professorship or an equivalent research position at an academic institution outside of France, and their research project must fall within the field of digital science and technology. The Madrid Institute for Advanced Study (MIAS), a joint institute of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and Casa de Velázquez, is pleased to announce its 2026 call for applications for the François Chevalier and Lucienne Domergue short-term research programmes.

The programmes offer outstanding researchers the opportunity to undertake a three-month research stay in Madrid in the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences and Law. They provide an international academic environment conducive to independent research, intellectual exchange and interdisciplinary dialogue.

The call offers up to 27 months of research stays in total. The Lucienne Domergue programme, supported by the Institut français d’Espagne, is intended preferably for researchers with current or previous links to French-speaking research institutions whose projects explore relations between France and Spain.

The Madrid Institute for Advanced Study (MIAS), a joint institute of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) and the Casa de Velázquez, is pleased to announce the Tomás y Valiente UAM MOTyVES 2026 Call for applications, offering 3 postdoctoral research positions in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Law. 

Co-funded by the European Union (Grant Agreement No. 101313325 – MOTYVES – HORIZON-MSCA-2025-COFUND-02), the MOTyVES programme is designed to attract researchers at early and intermediate stages of their academic careers to MIAS and UAM, and to provide them with an internationally oriented, interdisciplinary research environment in Madrid. 

Once the programme has ended, the fellows will be able to take up a permanent position at the Autonomous University of Madrid provided they meet the relevant requirements, as the programme aims also to offer young talented researchers with attractive opportunities to stabilise and develop their academic careers. The IIAS invites scholars from Israel and abroad to apply for Individual Fellowships.

The program is open to tenured scholars from all research disciplines and is intended to support innovative and original research. Individual Fellows spend five or ten months in residence at the IIAS, where they are able to focus on their own research while taking part in the academic life of the Institute.

Two or three scholars working on the same project may apply individually and indicate that they wish to work together.

The Israel Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS) invites scholars from Israel and abroad to submit proposals for Research Groups.

Proposals may address any research topic across all disciplines, including interdisciplinary research, and should be innovative with the potential to make a significant contribution to their field. Proposals are submitted by the organizer(s) of the Research Group.

Research Groups bring together scholars around research questions of common interest and are designed to foster sustained dialogue, integrative thinking and collaborative research. The National Library of Israel (NLI) and the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies (IIAS) offer a joint fellowship for established scholars with tenured positions at academic or research institutions outside Israel.

The fellowship supports research in Jewish Studies, Israel Studies, Islam and Middle Eastern Studies, Music, and the General Humanities, with preference given to projects that make use of the National Library of Israel’s special collections.

Fellows divide their residency between the neighboring NLI and IIAS in Jerusalem, combining access to the Library’s collections and expertise with the academic environment and scholarly community of the IIAS. Residencies are available for five or ten months.

The Institute for Advanced Study (IEA) at the University of Lyon is pleased to announce a call for applications for research stays as part of the multi-year partnership between the University of São Paulo (USP) and the Collegium de Lyon. The stays will run for a semester from either September 2027 to January 2028 or February to June 2028.

 The USP Fellowship includes:

The University of Lyon’s contribution includes :

It aims to raise awareness of, deepen, and strengthen the Lyon Saint-Étienne academic ecosystem’s AI activities. The focus encompasses both Core AI and its numerous applications, challenges, and uses.

The Artificial Intelligence Thematic Institute will promote collaborative efforts among academic stakeholders and with the socio-economic sector. Its ambition for the region is to support the structuring and development of research, innovation, and educational programs in AI in the Lyon Saint-Étienne territory.

This thematic institute of the University of Lyon brings together a multidisciplinary community of researchers to develop innovative research and training projects focused on food and the associated challenges.

By partnering with local authorities, economic stakeholders, and the non-profit sector, our institute helps to better understand food systems and practices, as well as their impacts on health, society, and the environment.

In doing so, our institute positions itself as a key player in boosting the international profile of the Lyon-Saint-Étienne area, addressing the challenges of food system transitions within their spatial and temporal dynamics.

SHAPE-Med@Lyon and the Collegium de Lyon are launching the One Health–SHAPE-Med@Lyon fellowship. Each year, the programme welcomes a researcher in residence for 5 or 10 months between September and June. The fellowship offers a supportive and transdisciplinary scientific environment.

The fellowship offers the opportunity to participate in a well-structured, transdisciplinary research and training programme within an academic environment.

SHAPE-Med@Lyon (Structuring one Health Approach for Personalized Medicine in Lyon) project won the France 2030 ‘ExcellencES’ Future Investment Programme 4. This structuring project leverages the full scientific potential of the Lyon–St-Étienne region to develop transformative research and training initiatives in health and well-being – encompassing human, animal, environmental, and social dimensions. It integrates the principles of 5P medicine with the One Health approach, positioning the individual as target and player in his or her environment. More information on SHAPE-Med Website.

Applicants must hold a position as a researcher or faculty member at an institution outside of France and have a hosting plan in a laboratory affiliated with one of SHAPE-Med@Lyon’s 13 institutional partners, for research projects focused on the One Health approach.
 

The SHAPE-Med@Lyon One Health Chair at the Collegium includes:
· Housing with all utilities included (excluding home insurance) in an apartment at the Collegium de Lyon residence, along with assistance with administrative formalities;
· Inclusion in the annual interdisciplinary cohort of researchers in residence at the Collegium, with participation in the weekly internal seminar and other scientific activities;
· The possibility of SHAPE-Med@Lyon contributing to research expenses;

Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS) at Aarhus University, Denmark, is pleased to announce up to 10 individual AIAS-AUFF Fellowships for curiosity-driven and talented researchers from all over the world and within all research disciplines.

The fellowships are open to researchers with 2 to 10 years of experience after completion of their PhD. The fellowships start on September 1, 2027, and run for 23 months until July 2029.

AIAS-AUFF Fellowship Programme

The AIAS-AUFF Fellowship Programme offers researchers the time and space to develop their research in an international and interdisciplinary environment. AIAS brings researchers together across disciplines, academic seniority and borders in a thriving, diverse and creative research environment.

The programme welcomes applications from all research disciplines and encourages interdisciplinary research projects and interests. Fellows will have opportunities to engage with researchers from different disciplines at AIAS and across Aarhus University, as well as to participate in academic activities, conferences and workshops.

Who can apply?

The call is open to curiosity-driven researchers and welcomes applications from researchers:

• with a career experience of 2 to 10 years after completion of their PhD by the deadline of the call
• from all research disciplines of any nationality
• who comply with a mobility demand as applicants must not have resided or carried out their main work activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the two years immediately prior to the deadline of the call.
• who have an interdisciplinary research project and/or interest
• who have/see relevant collaboration possibilities at Aarhus University

The fellowship includes

• a salary based on seniority (employment conditions and wages are regulated through the Danish collective union agreements)
• relocation travel costs covered
• relocation assistance

Fellows will have office space at AIAS and can participate in the academic training activities, conferences and workshops at AIAS. They will also be affiliated with the relevant research environments at Aarhus University.

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) is Bielefeld University’s Institute for Advanced Study. It offers opportunities—with respect to time, space, and funding—for outstanding interdisciplinary reearch. ZiF is open to scholarly applicants from all disciplines post-PhD, based at a university/research institute in Germany or abroad. Applicants may propose a research project to be conucted with a curated group of (preferably) international colleagues. In support of the work of groups on-site in Bielefeld, ZiF allocates financial resources and pro- vides infrastructure as well as organisational assistance. If an application is successful, ZiF then hosts these groups on its campus, offering ideal working conditions.

 Visiting Groups can, for example, explore new research topics and partnerships, finalise inter-disciplinary publications or conduct small research projects during their stay at ZiF. ZiF cannot support projects that require essential fieldwork, nor can it provide laboratory facilities.

WHAT ZIF OFFERS

• Duration: one stay at ZiF; lasting a minimum of one to a maximum of three months
• Funding Amount: up to EUR 50,000 to cover the costs for travel and accommodation, workshops and/or conferences on-site; please note: personnel expenses (buy-outs) cannot be covered, but an allowance of EUR 50 per day will be paid as a compensation for any additional costs
• Timing: Projects can commence approximately 12 months after the deadline. Dates for a stay at ZiF will be finalized once a grant was made, depending on availability.

Group Requirements

• Size: The minimum number of participants required for a group is three.
• Composition: Different disciplines must be involved; international participation is strongly encouraged. Decisions to not include international fellows must be well justified.
• We expect convenors and the majority of a group to be present at ZiF for their collaboration phase. Additional remote participants may be involved.
• The necessity for interdisciplinary collaboration must originate from the research at hand and must be explained in the proposal. The mere involvement of different disciplines does not suffice to meet this criterion.
• The stage of preparation of the proposed project should clearly show its feasibility within the timeframe suggested.
• A gender balance appropriate to the disciplines involved is expected.

Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD and a minimum of four years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of the application deadline. AIAS Visiting Fellowships are without salary, and it is therefore expected that successful applicants will bring their salary with them from their home institution. Applicants should have active collaborations with Aarhus University and have established contact with a researcher or research community at Aarhus University. An open-minded approach and a curiosity to other academic disciplines than your own is a great advantage.

Fellowship duration

Applicants can apply for a visiting fellowship with a duration of a minimum 2 months and up to 6 months.

Kindly be aware that the institute operates at a reduced pace during  January, July, and August, primarily due to holiday periods. Therefore, any fellowship during these months can only be as part of a longer visit, for instance, a 6 months fellowship.

Applications for 2027 are now open for playwrights and theatre makers for the IASH/Traverse Creative Fellowship. The Fellowship is a collaboration between IASH (the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh, supporting innovative research and public engagement activities across the arts, humanities and social sciences) and the Traverse Theatre, Scotland’s leading New Writing Theatre.

IASH has supported playwrights for more than twenty years. Notable writers-in-residence have included Douglas Maxwell, Femi Fatoba, Rona Munro and David Harrower, whose multi-award-winning play Blackbird was commissioned by IASH and the Edinburgh International Festival.

In 2027, we are providing one Creative Fellowship that commissions, develops and supports an exceptional and innovative playwright in the creation of a new piece of work that speaks to our lives now and into the future.

ABOUT THE 2027 FELLOWSHIP

A writing Fellowship of up to 10 months to take place from January 2027 onwards.  

• This Fellowship is open to writers with an idea or story for an audience-focused, ambitious and entertaining new play that speaks to the urgent issues impacting on our lives now and into the future, contributing to the cultural voice.
• This Fellowship will be spread across a 10-month period, giving the writer the time, space and support needed to research and write the play whilst working around other commitments.
• Each Fellowship will be tailored to the writer's needs and availability but it is expected that the writer can work at the University on a regular basis – such as two to three days a week, or two weeks per month for example. Applicants do not need to be based in Edinburgh, but should be able to travel to IASH regularly. Non-UK-based applicants are unlikely to be successful.
• The recipient will enjoy a private office at the University, as well as full access to the university library and the Institute’s many other resources, including joining the community of other Fellows working at IASH during this time.
• The recipient will receive dramaturgical support from the Traverse Literary Department, with the expectation that up to two drafts be completed during their residency, with another draft due at some point after the residency finishes (exact timelines to be tailored to needs of the project and Traverse Theatre). There may also be the opportunity for practical development periods working in collaboration with the Traverse artistic team and other creatives as required.
• The Fellow will be expected to contribute to IASH and Traverse Theatre events as mutually beneficial, giving at least one work-in-progress seminar and/or reading of the work to an invited audience.
• The stipend for this Fellowship is £12,000.

We offer residential fellowships to highly accomplished senior and promising young scholars seeking to spend 3-9 months in an interdisciplinary intellectual community of their peers while pursuing their own research. These scholarships are available in the social sciences and humanities, in the fields that contribute to the development of the Global Invisible University (GIU) curricular and research priorities. Residential fellows can be hosted for a 9-month period (October-June), for a 3-month short fall semester (October-December), a 5-month fall semester (October-February) or a 6-month spring semester (January-June). Fellows receive a stipend and accommodation at the Raoul Wallenberg Guesthouse in Budapest. Non-residential fellowships of 6 to 12 months are exclusively available to Threatened Scholars during the period of August 2027 to July 2028.

Our fellowship programs are meant to contribute to the formation of a Global Invisible University, integrating research, teaching, and civic engagement. GIU is a strategic initiative designed to build a new model of a “university for the future” that responds to the global crisis facing higher education, scholarship and production of and access to knowledge in contexts of war, displacement, autocratization, commercialization, and repression.

The eight Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies are pleased to announce the first call for fellowships in the NNF-IAS fellowship programme on Health and Sustainability, supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

This call is the first of four calls. The first sub-theme is: Inequity in Health.

In this first call, five fellowships are available for curiosity-driven, talented international researchers from any discipline. The five fellowships are distributed among the four main partner institutes and start on September 1, 2027, lasting for 23 months until July 2029. 

NNF-IAS Fellowship Theme: Inequity in Health

The world is facing a period of increased political volatility, environmental instability and new forms of health challenges. These dynamics are locally experienced yet globally interconnected. Addressing such challenges requires new approaches that integrate knowledge, insights and solutions across multiple domains and disciplines. Strengthening global cooperation among relevant research communities will be crucial for mitigating the negative consequences of the many dimensions of health inequity on the rise in our societies. 

The NNF-IAS Fellowship Programme will harness the unique interdisciplinary and collaborative potential offered by the Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies to strengthen the Nordic research environments within the fields of health and sustainability. The programme values career development and offers interdisciplinary training aimed at preparing the fellows to contribute to transformative breakthroughs in health and sustainability both in the Nordic region and with a global impact.

This call is open for research projects from all research disciplines aimed at understanding health disparities, inequities and the wider interplay of health and environment. 

Potential projects can include but are not limited to: 

• Structural and social determinants of health inequities from both Nordic and global perspectives;
• Health innovations and technologies;
• Equal opportunities, and
• Health challenges related to environmental developments, to mention a few.

The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies’ Fellowship Programmes provide a unique setting for researchers from all disciplines to fully focus on their projects within an international community. FRIAS fellowships are open to both early-career and senior researchers from Freiburg, Germany, and all over the world, supporting dedicated research time, interdisciplinary collaboration, and access to University of Freiburg resources.

Fellows receive a monthly living allowance, with additional funding for accommodation and a mobility allowance to cover travel costs. Office spaces, library access, and tailored support for specific needs may also be provided. Further information is available on the specific programme pages.

The Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies (HCAS) was established in 2001 as an independent institute of the University of Helsinki to enhance scholarly excellence in the humanities and social sciences, promote interaction between different fields of academic research, and to further international academic cooperation. The Collegium’s fellowships are open to researchers in the humanities, social sciences, educational sciences, theology, and law, and to researchers in other fields focusing on topics related to the human sciences. The applicant’s doctoral degree must have been conferred by the application deadline.

The Collegium appoints fellows at different stages in their academic careers and from different disciplines, but has no fixed quotas for seniority, discipline, nationality, or gender. The Collegium is committed to promoting equality and preventing discrimination in its operations.

Applications must be prepared in accordance with the specified instructions available on the HCAS website. Successful applicants should provide evidence of their ability to work in an international, interdisciplinary research environment and of their ability to publish at a high international level. In the application documents, applicants must also indicate how they plan to participate in the interdisciplinary cooperation central for the Collegium as an institute of advanced study. Relevant evidence may be provided by reference to publications, academic activities or participation in research projects or posts at research institutes, or in the research proposal itself. Planned or existing cooperation with researchers of the University of Helsinki may be explained in the letter of motivation, in which the applicants are asked to explain why the University of Helsinki is a suitable environment for their research.

The Collegium does not consider research plans that propose to rewrite the applicant’s PhD thesis as a book. The Collegium will not grant two consecutive funding periods to one researcher. If an applicant has been at the Collegium before, at least ten years must have passed after the previous fellowship term, and the applicant must justify why they ought to be accepted for another funding period.

The Core Fellowship Program is the basis of all HCAS activities and the majority of our fellows are appointed through it. We are seeking up to 15 Core Fellows for the academic year 2027–2028. You may find the key information on the core fellowship below. The application period begins on 17 August 2026 and ends on 14 September 2026 at 23:59 local Helsinki time.

• Annual open call usually from August to September.
• Open to researchers from the humanities, social sciences, behavioral sciences, theology, and law, as well as to researchers in other fields focusing on topics related to the human sciences.
• Employment, not a grant program.
• Fixed term appointments for 0,5–3 years.
• For all career levels beyond the doctorate (post-docs, mid-career researchers, and full professors).
• Usual number of appointments 8–14 per year.
• Number of applications has been 250–450 per year, with well over 50% from outside Finland.
• No fixed career stage or discipline quotas.

• Time and freedom for focused research, free from administrative duties and heavy teaching obligations.
• A thriving and stimulating collegial work environment in the center of Helsinki, surrounded by libraries.
• Salaried positions with associated benefits (paid family and sick leave, pension benefits and occupational health care) in accordance with the General Collective Agreement for Universities.

• Fellows are expected to spend at least 80% of their total research period at the Collegium.
• Fellows are expected to attend the weekly Fellows’ Seminar.
• Fellows must report their publications in the University’s research portal.
• While working at HCAS, fellows are required to mention the Collegium as their primary affiliation in publications, presentations, and interviews.
• Fellows whose term exceeds one year have a 5% teaching duty starting from the second year onwards, which may be fulfilled by helping to organize the HCAS Winter School for doctoral students.
• After their fellowship has ended, fellows are expected to submit a final report.
