Fellowship period: September 2027 until July 2029

Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies (AIAS) at Aarhus University, Denmark, is pleased to announce up to 10 individual AIAS-AUFF Fellowships for curiosity-driven and talented researchers from all over the world and within all research disciplines.

The fellowships are open to researchers with 2 to 10 years of experience after completion of their PhD. The fellowships start on September 1, 2027, and run for 23 months until July 2029.

AIAS-AUFF Fellowship Programme

The AIAS-AUFF Fellowship Programme offers researchers the time and space to develop their research in an international and interdisciplinary environment. AIAS brings researchers together across disciplines, academic seniority and borders in a thriving, diverse and creative research environment.

The programme welcomes applications from all research disciplines and encourages interdisciplinary research projects and interests. Fellows will have opportunities to engage with researchers from different disciplines at AIAS and across Aarhus University, as well as to participate in academic activities, conferences and workshops.

Who can apply?

The call is open to curiosity-driven researchers and welcomes applications from researchers:

• with a career experience of 2 to 10 years after completion of their PhD by the deadline of the call
• from all research disciplines of any nationality
• who comply with a mobility demand as applicants must not have resided or carried out their main work activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the two years immediately prior to the deadline of the call.
• who have an interdisciplinary research project and/or interest
• who have/see relevant collaboration possibilities at Aarhus University

The fellowship includes

• a salary based on seniority (employment conditions and wages are regulated through the Danish collective union agreements)
• relocation travel costs covered
• relocation assistance

Fellows will have office space at AIAS and can participate in the academic training activities, conferences and workshops at AIAS. They will also be affiliated with the relevant research environments at Aarhus University.

Timeline of the application process

• Opening of call: August 2026.

• Evaluation and selection period: November 2026 -February 2027.
• Applicants will receive answers: March 2027.

Fellowship period: Minimum 2 months and up to 6 months

The Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies at Aarhus University offers a number of visiting fellowships to outstanding researchers from abroad who are looking for an opportunity to engage in the international and interdisciplinary research community of AIAS and to collaborate with the research environments at Aarhus University (AU).

Visiting fellows will have their daily office space at AIAS, and will have the opportunity to participate in the activities at AIAS and at the relevant research environments at Aarhus University. AIAS offers optimal office facilities, and a thriving international and interdisciplinary community with joint social and academic activities.

AIAS - Interdisciplinary engagement and diversity

AIAS breaks down disciplinary and national boundaries and provides the framework and the setting for dialogue and discussions that challenge and expand the conventional ways of thinking and contribute to collaborative research. As AIAS has fellows from all over the world and from all academic disciplines, visiting fellows will therefore be an integral part of a much wider and global research community. AIAS strives to create not only an interdisciplinary, but also an inclusive academic environment, and applications are welcome regardless of race, religion, nationality, sex, gender and disability.

Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD and a minimum of four years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of the application deadline. AIAS Visiting Fellowships are without salary, and it is therefore expected that successful applicants will bring their salary with them from their home institution. Applicants should have active collaborations with Aarhus University and have established contact with a researcher or research community at Aarhus University. An open-minded approach and a curiosity to other academic disciplines than your own is a great advantage.

Fellowship duration

Applicants can apply for a visiting fellowship with a duration of a minimum 2 months and up to 6 months.

Kindly be aware that the institute operates at a reduced pace during  January, July, and August, primarily due to holiday periods. Therefore, any fellowship during these months can only be as part of a longer visit, for instance, a 6 months fellowship.

Application deadlines

• Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 12 noon Danish time, for visiting fellowships starting in February 2027 and ending in August 2027
• After the application deadline, the AIAS Review Board for Visiting Fellowships will assess the applications, and answers will be sent out within 30 days to all applicants.

The application must include:

• Letter of motivation (max 2 pages)
• Letter of support from an Aarhus University contact
• CV of applicant, including a selected list of publications (max 5 pages)
• PhD diploma
• Exact dates of preferred start and end dates of the fellowship
• Applications must be submitted online via the system GrantOne.

Fellowship period: September 2027 until July 2029

The eight Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies are pleased to announce the first call for fellowships in the NNF-IAS fellowship programme on Health and Sustainability, supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

This call is the first of four calls. The first sub-theme is: Inequity in Health.

In this first call, five fellowships are available for curiosity-driven, talented international researchers from any discipline. The five fellowships are distributed among the four main partner institutes and start on September 1, 2027, lasting for 23 months until July 2029. 

NNF-IAS Fellowship Theme: Inequity in Health

The world is facing a period of increased political volatility, environmental instability and new forms of health challenges. These dynamics are locally experienced yet globally interconnected. Addressing such challenges requires new approaches that integrate knowledge, insights and solutions across multiple domains and disciplines. Strengthening global cooperation among relevant research communities will be crucial for mitigating the negative consequences of the many dimensions of health inequity on the rise in our societies. 

The NNF-IAS Fellowship Programme will harness the unique interdisciplinary and collaborative potential offered by the Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies to strengthen the Nordic research environments within the fields of health and sustainability. The programme values career development and offers interdisciplinary training aimed at preparing the fellows to contribute to transformative breakthroughs in health and sustainability both in the Nordic region and with a global impact.

This call is open for research projects from all research disciplines aimed at understanding health disparities, inequities and the wider interplay of health and environment. 

Potential projects can include but are not limited to: 

• Structural and social determinants of health inequities from both Nordic and global perspectives;
• Health innovations and technologies;
• Equal opportunities, and
• Health challenges related to environmental developments, to mention a few.
